The good news? FIV is not a "death sentence." In fact, cats with FIV can live long, happy, and healthy lives just like any other feline. Here is a simple guide to understanding FIV and how to care for these special cats.
What is FIV?
FIV stands for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. It is a slow-acting virus that can weaken a cat’s immune system over time.
It is important to know two things right away:
FIV is NOT contagious to humans or dogs. You cannot catch it from your cat.
FIV is not easily spread between cats. It is primarily spread through deep bite wounds. It is rarely spread through casual contact like sharing water bowls, grooming, or snuggling.
Caring for an FIV+ Cat
Caring for a cat with FIV is very similar to caring for any other cat. They don't usually require daily medication - just a little extra attention to their lifestyle:
Keep them Indoors: To protect their immune system and prevent them from getting into fights with neighborhood cats, FIV+ cats should live indoors only.
Quality Nutrition: Feeding a high-quality, balanced diet helps keep their immune system strong.
Regular Vet Checkups: We recommend wellness visits twice a year. Due to their immune systems being weaker, it is important to catch any dental issues or sniffles early before they become bigger problems.
Lower Stress: Like humans, cats stay healthier when they aren't stressed! A calm home environment goes a long way.
Can FIV+ cats live with other cats?
Yes! As long as the cats in the home get along and don’t engage in aggressive fighting, the risk of transmission is extremely low. Many households successfully have "mixed" residents where FIV+ and FIV-negative cats live together in harmony for years.
Why adopt an FIV+ cat?
FIV+ cats are often the "underdogs" of the shelter. Due to old myths about the virus, they tend to wait longer for homes. When you adopt one, you aren’t just getting a grateful companion - you’re helping us break the stigma and saving a life that others might overlook.
