Understanding FeLV: A Guide to Caring for Your Feline Friend

While the name sounds scary, a FeLV diagnosis is not an immediate death sentence. Many FeLV-positive cats can enjoy a wonderful, comfortable quality of life in a loving home. However, because the virus weakens the immune system, it does significantly impact a cat's long-term health and overall lifespan. With proactive veterinary care and the right indoor environment, you can help them thrive. Here is what you need to know about managing the virus and caring for an FeLV+ cat.

What is FeLV?

Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a retrovirus that weakens a cat’s immune system. It is specific to cats - it cannot be transmitted to humans, dogs, or other non-feline pets.

The virus is typically spread through "social contact." This includes:

• Sharing water and food bowls.

• Mutual grooming.

• Bite wounds from fighting.

• From a mother cat to her kittens.

FeLV+ cats are more susceptible to infections and certain diseases since the virus weakens the immune system. However, many cats remain healthy for years after their diagnosis.

How to Care for an FeLV-Positive Cat

If you have an FeLV+ kitty, your main goal is to keep their immune system strong and minimize their exposure to other illnesses.

1. Keep Them Indoors

The most important rule for FeLV+ cats is to keep them strictly indoors. This protects them from picking up viruses or bacteria from the environment and prevents them from spreading FeLV to other cats in the neighborhood.

2. High-Quality Nutrition

Feed your cat a balanced, high-quality diet. Avoid raw meat diets, as FeLV+ cats have a harder time fighting off parasites and bacteria often found in raw foods.

3. Regular Vet Check-ups

While most cats go to the vet once a year, FeLV+ cats should go every six months. Regular blood work and physical exams help catch potential health issues early when they are easiest to treat.

4. Stress-Free Environment

Stress can weaken the immune system. Keep your home environment calm, provide plenty of enrichment (like scratching posts and toys), and maintain a consistent routine.

5. Multi-Cat Households

FeLV is contagious to other cats. If you have an FeLV+ cat, they should ideally be the "only child" or live in a home only with other FeLV+ cats. While there is a vaccine available for FeLV-negative cats, it is not 100% effective, so physical separation is the safest option.
