Veterinary Assistant
🌟 About the Role As a Veterinary Assistant, you’ll work closely with our Veterinarians and Licensed Veterinary Technicians to ensure the health and well-being of animals in our care. From assisting with surgeries and daily rounds to administering medications and educating adopters, this is a dynamic and hands-on role perfect for someone with a heart for animals. 🐶 Key Responsibilities Assist with exams, dental procedures, surgeries, and immunizations Restrain animals for medical procedures Administer oral, topical, and injectable medications Maintain clean, sanitary conditions in medical and shelter areas Prepare prescriptions and perform routine lab work Update treatment records in the shelter and veterinarian database Provide excellent customer service to adopters, fosters, and volunteers Support with inventory, restocking, and clerical tasks ✅What We’re Looking For Minimum 2 years of experience in animal medical care (shelter experience preferred) Comfortable handling animals of unknown or difficult temperament Familiarity with common companion animal diseases and treatment protocols Professional, compassionate, and team-oriented Able to recognize and report medical or behavioral issues Reliable and self-directed, with strong communication skills 💻 Technical & Physical Requirements Familiarity with veterinarian and shelter management software and Google Workspace Able to lift up to 50 lbs and push up to 150 lbs regularly Comfortable standing, bending, and walking for extended periods Willingness to work with potential allergens 🐾 Why Work With Us? Animal Caretaker
🌟 About the Role Animal Caretakers play a vital role in the daily care, cleanliness, and well-being of our shelter animals. You'll work closely with the medical and adoption/foster teams to ensure the animals receive the best possible care in a safe, clean, and positive environment. Current pay rate: $17.00/hour 🐶 Key Responsibilities Clean and sanitize kennels, cages, and other animal areas daily Feed, water, and exercise animals according to their specific needs Observe animals for signs of illness or behavioral changes and report concerns Provide basic hygiene and behavioral care under staff direction Support adoption processes and work collaboratively with volunteers Maintain daily records in shelter software and assist with inventory restocking Assist with general upkeep of the shelter’s appearance and functionality ✅Qualifications & Requirements High School diploma or GED/HSE required 1–2 years of experience in an animal shelter preferred Able to lift 30 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks Comfortable working outdoors and around animals/products containing peanuts Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures Excellent communication and teamwork skills Must be professional, courteous, and aligned with the mission of DCSPCA 🌦️ Working Conditions Frequent bending, kneeling, walking, and standing for extended periods Exposure to animals of various temperaments and outdoor weather conditions Use of cleaning agents and disinfectant solutions 📍 Location: Hyde Park, NY Schedule: Our shelter operates from 8 AM to 5 PM, seven days a week (including holidays) to ensure animals receive daily care. Licensed Veterinary Technician
🌟 About the Role The LVT will work under the supervision of the Medical Administrator to ensure all of the clients’ health needs are met. This position provides support to Veterinarians, as needed. This role supports both shelter and public patients. Full-time, Non-Exempt or Part-time, Non-Exempt Current Pay Rate: $25.00 - $35.00/hour 🐶 Key Responsibilities Medical Care Assist veterinarians in examinations, surgeries, and medical procedures Administer medications, vaccinations, and treatments as prescribed Perform diagnostic tests (e.g., blood work, x-rays) and prepare samples for laboratory analysis Monitor the health and behavior of animals, reporting any changes or concerns to the Veterinarian Change animal bandages, bedding, and kennel materials Surgical Assistance Prepare animals and surgical equipment for procedures. Perform anesthesia protocols, including pre-meds, induction, monitoring and post-op Provide care for animals after procedures by monitoring vitals and providing heat support Ensure all surgical instruments and areas are cleaned and sterilized Record Keeping Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for all shelter and community animals Document treatments, procedures, and observations in accordance with shelter policies Work closely with Lead Vet Tech to maintain inventory and controlled drug log Client Support Educate potential adopters and foster caregivers on proper animal care and medical needs Provide post-operative care instructions and medication administration guidance Perform client callbacks as needed Shelter Support Assist in the medical intake and evaluation of new animals Participate in community outreach and education programs Other duties as assigned ✅Qualifications & Requirements Must be a Licensed Veterinary Technician in New York State 2-3 years of experience in a Veterinary or Shelter Clinic preferred 2-3 years of High Quality-High Volume Spay Neuter experience preferred Ability to compassionately and kindly handle frightened or aggressive companion animals Flexible schedule, ability to rotate ‘on call’ weekends to assist with emergencies and shelter patients Excellent record keeping and attention to detail Ability to function and focus in a demanding and fast-paced environment Excellent written and verbal communication skills Collaborative team working style Demonstrate an attitude of consideration and courtesy to members of the public, co-workers, and volunteers Commitment to mission, vision, and values of the DCSPCA 📍 Location: Hyde Park, NY Schedule: Our shelter operates from 8 AM to 5 PM, seven days a week (including holidays) to ensure animals receive daily care.
