💗 RESCUE TAILS: Ivy

Suffering from allergies, Ivy was grumpy and often overlooked by adopters. But when she caught the eye of a long-time DCSPCA volunteer, Ivy’s life was changed forever.

Ivy was a little grumpy when she arrived at Dutchess County SPCA (DCSPCA). You would be, too, if you were suffering from untreated allergies! Ivy’s irritated skin caused her to be somewhat standoffish with humans. But deep down, she was a loving cat who was just looking for the person who would help her overcome her allergies and give her a cozy home. She found that special someone in Mary, who has been a volunteer and part of the DCSPCA family for decades.

Mary shared with us about how Ivy has come to be an important part of her family:

Soon after meeting her; I was asked to foster her because she was not doing well in the shelter environment.

DCSPCA: How did you meet Ivy?

MARY: I first met Ivy in an office at the shelter. She was being kept in the office because she was on a special diet for her skin irritation due to allergies.

She had no hair on her tummy or the inside of her legs, and she was pulling her hair out due to the itching.

She bonded with me, and we fell in love with her, so we decided to give her a forever home.

DCSPCA: You were asked to foster Ivy rather than adopt her. Why did you decide to adopt?

MARY: Soon after meeting her; I was asked to foster her because she was not doing well in the shelter environment. She bonded with me, and we fell in love with her, so we decided to give her a forever home. We also realized that she needed medication to help with her skin, and we were willing to provide that for her.

DCSPCA: What are some of Ivy’s favorite things or activities?

MARY: One of her favorite things is to sit in windows and watch the birds, rabbits, and chipmunks. She also loves to sit on laps and get lots of cuddles, especially from me.

Adopting Ivy has made me realize how rewarding it is to adopt a senior special needs animal.

DCSPCA: How has adopting Ivy changed your life?

MARY: Adopting Ivy has made me realize how rewarding it is to adopt a senior special needs animal. They are often overlooked at the shelter because of their age and health problems. They have so much love to give and need to have a family and home in their remaining years.

DCSPCA: Is there anything else you’d like to share about life with Ivy?

MARY: Ivy is now taking two medications which have nearly completely eliminated her allergic reactions. Because she is feeling so much better; she has become a funny and happy girl.
